At approximately 11.30am on Wednesday 15 February Clogher Head RNLI responded to a distress call from a local fisherman about 1.5 miles out from Dunany Point. The 36ft wooden boat with two men on board was rapidly taking on water due to a mechanical failure and was at risk of sinking.
The fishermen ran into difficulty when they attempted to haul in their catch and the boat didn’t respond. When they went below the deck to investigate they discovered that the boat was taking on water.
Once they sent out the distress signal the Coast Guard immediately tasked the Clogher Head RNLI lifeboat and the rescue helicopter. Volunteer lifeboat crew onboard the Clogher Head Lifeboat Doris Bleasdale responded immediately to the call and arrived first on scene at 11.50.
The rescue helicopter was no longer required as the lifeboat crew transferred a pump to the stricken vessel. Crew members also went onboard the boat to give assistance to the fishermen. Once the water was pumped from the boat the lifeboat escorted the fishing boat and the men back to the safety of Oriel Harbour arriving at 12.35pm.
This incident was the second call for the Clogher Head lifeboat in a week. On Sunday 12 February the volunteer crew were tasked with co-ordinating the search at sea for a Dundalk man who drowned following a tragic accident when his boat capsized that afternoon.
