The all-weather lifeboat Dr John McSparron was launched at 10.30pm and conducted a thorough search from Larne harbour to Ballygally head, while the inshore lifeboat Terry searched closer to the shoreline near to rocky areas. The PSNI helicopter was also involved with the search.
Both lifeboats used pyrotechnic flares to provide a clearer view of the search area in the darkness. Conditions at the time were described as calm.
Around 1.00am (Sunday 8 April), Belfast coastguard stood down both boats after it was confirmed by the PSNI that the female had been located and was safe.
