An inshore lifeboat station was established at Kilkeel in 1986. The ILB was stored in a small building on the south side of the harbour. This house was used until 1990 when an Atlantic 21 ILB came on station. The current lifeboat house at Kilkeel opened in 1992. The new station house which was built on the north side of the harbour provides much improved crew facilities, workshop, fuel store and storage for the stations ILB. A davit system was installed on the quay to launch and recover the ILB.
