Lough Ree RNLI called to assist swimmer in difficulty
Lough Ree RNLI lifeboat crew were alerted by the Coast Guard on Wednesday evening (10 June 2015) when a teenager went missing while swimming north of the railway bridge in Athlone. The alarm was raised shortly before 6pm when a passerby, who had noticed the boy swimming, realised he had disappeared from view. The nearby Athlone Sub-Aqua Club was preparing for a routine Wednesday evening training exercise and immediately began searching for the teen. When Lough Ree RNLI Lifeboat, the Eric Rowse, arrived minutes later, the boy had been located and transferred to the care of the ambulance at the scene. The ambulance rushed the teenager to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, where he is receiving further treatment. Lough Ree RNLI volunteer crewmember Stewart McMickan, who assisted with administering CPR, said ?Emergency and volunteer services were well-coordinated; the young man was located in the water quickly and medical care was on hand when he was brought ashore.?
