As the May Bank Holiday weekend approaches, leading water safety organisations are urging the public to prioritise safety when visiting coastal areas or taking part in water-based activities.

Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland, and RNLI have jointly issued an appeal to anyone planning time on, in, or near the water. With the long weekend traditionally marking the beginning of the boating season, many vessels are returning to the water after months in winter storage bringing renewed risks alongside the excitement of the season.
Boat owners, in particular, are being reminded of the importance of thorough pre-launch checks. After a period of inactivity, even well-maintained boats can develop faults that pose serious safety hazards. Essential inspections should include examining the hull for damage, ensuring the engine is functioning correctly, checking the fuel system for leaks or contamination, and confirming that steering and battery systems are fully operational.
Equally critical is the condition and availability of onboard safety equipment. Fire extinguishers, communication devices such as radios, and life-saving gear should all be checked to ensure they are in good working order and easily accessible. These precautions can make a significant difference in an emergency situation.
The organisations stress that preparation and awareness are key to preventing accidents and ensuring that everyone can enjoy the water safely during the holiday weekend and throughout the summer season.
Anyone sailing or motorboating is reminded to always:
Check the weather forecast, wind conditions and tide times before going afloat
Ensure an emergency action plan is in place and that all crew receive a safety briefing
Inform a responsible person ashore of your plans and your expected return time
Wear a suitable, correctly fitted lifejacket at all times
Carry a reliable means of calling and signalling for help
Have the appropriate level of training for your craft and activity
Operate at a safe speed appropriate to the prevailing conditions and surroundings.
The Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI stress that preparation, situational awareness and having the right safety equipment save lives.
For further guidance, water users are encouraged to consult the Code of Practice for the Safe Operation of Recreational Craft
You can also access free checklists on the RNLI website to help before you go afloat and while you are underway: rnli.org/boostyourskills
If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast or think that they are in trouble, use marine VHF radio Channel 16 or dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
