On Sunday, January 25th, at 1:30 pm, the Courtmacsherry RNLI volunteer crew received a request to assist three surfers who found themselves in difficulty off Inchydoney Beach in Clonakilty Bay.

Responding promptly, the all-weather lifeboat, manned by a dedicated crew of six, was launched swiftly and arrived at the scene by 2 pm to begin an immediate search and rescue operation.
Upon arrival, it was discovered that two of the surfers had managed to reach the safety of the shore on their own. However, the third surfer faced a more perilous situation, having been caught by an offshore wind amidst a formidable four-meter wave swell.
The RNLI crew, quickly located the distressed surfer. The individual was suffering from cramp, a condition that could worsen rapidly in such cold and tumultuous waters. The lifeboat crew expertly brought the surfer aboard, where the casualty care team provided an initial assessment and began administering necessary care.
With the rescued surfer safely on board, the lifeboat returned to Courtmacsherry. Upon arrival, the individual was taken to the Station House for further assessment and to receive dry clothing and additional care.
Speaking following the call out, Lifeboat Operations Manager Brian O Dwyer said “Great credit is due to those on the shore today who immediately called for help when required by dialling 999 or 112 and asking for the Coast Guard”.
All three surfers were reunited in the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Station House at 5.30 pm after an eventful afternoon.
The crew on today’s callout were Coxswain Peter Nunan, Mechanic Tadgh McCarthy and crew Denis Murphy, Dave Philips, Luke Hanley and Paul McCarthy.
