In the early hours of Monday morning, 10 November, the Kilmore Quay RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat was tasked with a rescue operation. A lone sailor aboard a 12-meter yacht required assistance due to engine failure. The yacht was located approximately 9 nautical miles southeast of Kilmore Quay.

Upon receiving a request from the Coast Guard, the volunteer crew of the all-weather Tamar class lifeboat, Killarney, launched at 3:21 am to assist the stranded sailor.
Sea conditions at the time were described as moderate. Weather conditions were good, cloudy with westerly wind Force 5 to 6.
The lifeboat reached the yacht at 3:54 am. The crew first ensured the safety and well-being of the sailor on board. After confirming that the sailor was unharmed, the crew determined that towing the yacht back to the harbour was the safest solution.
With the tow successfully established, the all-weather lifeboat began its journey back to Kilmore Quay. The operation was efficiently executed, and the lifeboat, with the yacht in tow, arrived at the harbour at 5:47 am.
Upon completion of the callout, the lifeboat returned to its berth in the marina, where it was promptly prepared for service.
Speaking following the call out, Eddie Byrne, Kilmore Quay RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: ‘We would like to commend the sailor for raising the alarm when they knew they were in difficulty. It is always the right thing to do an we wish them well on their onward journey.’
