The lifeboat was launched at 4.22pm following a report that the two-metre inflatable was drifting further from the shore.

The volunteer crew quickly proceeded to the area between Buncrana Pier and Carrickcullion Rocks, where they located the casualty vessel.

The two people were taken aboard the lifeboat and, using an alongside tow, the dinghy was safely recovered to Buncrana Pier.

The incident serves as a reminder to anyone heading out on the water of the importance of carrying a reliable means of communication in case assistance is required.

The Coast Guard can be contacted on VHF Channel 16, or by mobile phone on 999 or 112.
