Newcastle RNLI volunteers launched both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats on Saturday (23 August) after receiving reports of a 21 foot fishing boat with 1 person onboard, suffering from engine failure and drifting close to the cow and calf rocks near Tyrella beach, around 5 miles east of the lifeboat station.

The volunteer crew responded and were under way within 15 minutes, a short time later the Inshore lifeboat arrived on scene first and assessed the options.

A decision was made after request from the vessels skipper to tow clear of the rocks and back to Newcastle harbour.

Once cleared of the rocks and into deeper water the tow was transferred to the All-weather lifeboat for onward journey to the harbour.

By 4.30pm the casualty vessel was moored safely in Newcastle harbour and both boats were stood down and returned to base ready for the next call.

Remember: If you're in difficulty on or near the water—or if you see someone in trouble—dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
