Members of the public around Lough Corrib and the Cong area may notice an increased presence of emergency and search and rescue resources this Saturday as Galway Civil Defence hosts a planned Search & Rescue training exercise.

The exercise will bring together Civil Defence personnel and rescue craft from a number of counties, alongside supporting emergency resources. Corrib Mask Search & Rescue has been invited to participate in the exercise, which will provide an opportunity for participating teams to work together in a realistic training environment.

During the exercise, crews will practise a range of important search and rescue skills, including water search and rescue, communications, navigation and inter-unit coordination.

A number of rescue boats, emergency vehicles, drones and personnel may be visible on and around Lough Corrib and in the Cong area throughout the day.

Exercises such as this are an important part of maintaining operational readiness. They allow different rescue organisations and units to train alongside one another, share knowledge and experience, test communications and procedures, and strengthen coordination between neighbouring teams.

For members of the public and other users of Lough Corrib, the increased activity is part of a planned training exercise and is not in response to an emergency.

Galway Civil Defence has thanked the public and other lake users for their co-operation and understanding while the exercise is taking place.
