Sligo Bay RNLI launch to swimmer in difficulty

At 5:23 pm on Monday 8 September, Sligo Bay Lifeboat was tasked by the Coast Guard following a call from a concerned member of the public. An experienced swimmer had got caught in strong currents off the swimming pool area and was been taken around Deadman's Point.

The Sligo Bay volunteer crew quickly launched the stations Atlantic 85 class inshore lifeboat and proceeded to the scene.


As the lifeboat approached the scene with four volunteer crew on board, the swimmer had managed to come ashore unaided at the slipway by Sligo Yacht Club and did not require any further assistance. The inshore lifeboat stood down and returned to the station.

Speaking after the call-out the Lifeboat Operations Manager, Dermot Gillen, thanked the member of the public for their quick action in calling the Coast Guard and the volunteer crew for their swift response.


He said that this week there are particularly high tides, known as spring tides, and advises all swimmers to be extra careful and to please take heed of the signage at the pool area.


Remember if you see anyone in trouble, don't delay, call 999/112 and ask for the Coast Guard. Every second counts.
