At 5.23pm the volunteers pagers sounded for the launch of the stations inshore Lifeboat.

With some crew already around the harbour area enjoying the lovely weather, the D Class lifeboat “Eliza” launched swiftly. The tasking from Belfast Coastguard was reports that a child on an inflatable was being swept out to sea in Dundrum inner bay close to Keel Point.

At 5.48pm the crew arrived on scene to discover the casualty had been recovered by a good samaritan on a paddle board and was in the care of the Newcastle coastguard rescue team. The ILB returned to station at 6.15pm and was washed down and made ready for the next service.

The pagers then sounded again at 7.33pm after a number of phone calls were made to the station with concerns for a kayaker who had capsised at the back of Newcastle harbour. The duty launch authority made the decision to launch the Inshore lifeboat As the boat was preparing for launch at the water edge, a message came from the shore crew that kayaker had managed to get to shore and required no further assistance.
