Achill Island RNLI were requested by the Irish Coast Guard to come to the aid of two fishermen onboard a small fishing vessel this morning (Thursday 22 May).

The fishermen had been fishing in an area between Curraun and Mulranny when their propeller became fouled, and they called for assistance.
The all-weather lifeboat Sam and Ada Moody launched shortly before 11am with a crew of seven onboard. It didn’t take long to locate the fishermen and their vessel, and the lifeboat crew were happy to find the fishermen to be well and in good spirits, and with both wearing their lifejackets. The situation was assessed and a decision was made to tow the small vessel back to Curraun pier as the fishermen could not make any safe onward progress.
Sea conditions were flat calm at the time, with excellent visibility and fine weather. The lifeboat then made the short journey back to the lifeboat station, returning at around 12pm.
Speaking after the call out, Ciaran Needham, Achill Island RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: 'Sometimes, despite the best of planning and preparation, even the most experienced seafarers can find themselves needing assistance. In this situation the fishermen did everything right and made the correct decision in calling for help. They were both wearing their lifejackets and had a means of making the call, and we commend them both for their actions this morning.
'If you, or someone you see needs help on or near the water, don’t hesitate to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard. Our volunteer crew are always happy to help when needed.'
