Crosshaven RNLI launches to assist three people aboard disabled boat in Cork Harbour

Crosshaven RNLI's volunteer lifeboat crew launched late on Thursday night (30 July) to assist three people aboard a small open boat that had suffered engine failure in Cork Harbour.
As darkness descended upon the harbour, the Coast Guard requested the launch shortly after 10pm following reports of a 15-foot open boat adrift near the oil refinery with three people on board.
The volunteer crew of helm James Fegan and crew members Derek Moynan, Darren O'Keeffe and Kevin McCarthy launched immediately and made their way to the casualty vessel.
The three occupants had experienced engine problems and initially attempted to row back to their base. However, when they realised they were making no progress, they dropped anchor to prevent the boat from drifting further into danger and contacted the Coast Guard for assistance.
On arrival, the RNLI crew assessed the situation and, as the casualty vessel posed a potential hazard to navigation, established a tow. The boat was then safely brought to White Point.
Speaking following the callout, Crosshaven RNLI helm James Fegan praised the actions of those aboard the vessel.
"The three people on board all had lifejackets and made the correct decisions," he said. "When they realised they weren't making any progress, they dropped anchor and called for help. Wearing lifejackets and seeking assistance early helped ensure a safe outcome for everyone involved."
The lifeboat returned to Crosshaven RNLI station, where it was recovered, refuelled and made ready for service again by 11.30pm.
The launch and recovery crew were Dave Venner, Darryl Hughes and Conor Barry. The launch authority was Michael McCann.
