The alarm was raised shortly after low water, with Valentia Coast Guard requesting the volunteer lifeboat crew to launch at 4.35pm to assess the situation and determine what assistance, if any, was required.

The lifeboat, under the command of Dave Venner and crewed by Shane McAuliffe, Conor Barry and Darren O'Keeffe, proceeded to the scene where they found the trawler aground with seven persons on board.

On arrival, an RNLI crew member was transferred onto the vessel to carry out a welfare check on those aboard and to assess for any signs of pollution or environmental concerns resulting from the grounding.

Following discussions with the skipper and crew, it was determined that all those on board were safe and well. The trawler's crew advised that they were content to remain on board and await the rising tide to refloat the vessel.

With no immediate assistance required and no pollution concerns identified, the Coast Guard stood the lifeboat down and the crew returned to station.

The volunteer shore crew supporting the launch were Roy Sexton, Darryl Hughes, Alan Venner, Kevin McCarthy, James Fegan and Jon McClean. The launch was authorised by Launch Authority Hugh Mockler.

If you see someone in difficulty at sea, on the coast, along cliffs, beaches, mudflats or riverbanks, or if you witness a vessel in distress, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard immediately.
