Crosshaven RNLI Responds to Person in Water Near Spike Island

Crosshaven RNLI was tasked by the Coast Guard at approximately 6.45pm last evening, Thursday 13 August, while the volunteer lifeboat crew were on exercise in the Myrtleville area.
The callout was to a report of a person in the water between Haulbowline Island and Spike Island. The Crosshaven RNLI volunteer crew immediately responded, while the Coast Guard broadcast an all-ships PAN PAN to vessels in the area, requesting assistance.
Fortunately, the casualty was rescued by a member of the public on a jet ski and brought safely to Paddy’s Point slipway. The casualty was assessed by a member of the Crosshaven RNLI casualty care team before the lifeboat crew returned to their exercise.
Crosshaven RNLI helm James Fegan said:
“Only swim where it is safe to do so, do not jump off objects such as bridges and be aware of strong tides.”
Crosshaven RNLI reminds everyone to take care around the water, particularly in areas where tides and currents can be strong. Anyone planning to swim should choose a safe, lifeguarded location where possible and avoid entering the water from structures such as bridges or piers.
The Crosshaven RNLI lifeboat crew involved were James Fegan, Kline Pennefather, Griff Kelleher and Alex Barry.
The shore crew were Peter O’Halloran, Alan Venner and Darryl Hughes.
