Cyclists from across Ireland are being invited to take part in the 2026 Dave Fenton Charity Cycle, a special community event in support of two vital local organisations, the Castletownbere RNLI Lifeboat Station and Castletownbere GAA.

Taking place on Saturday, 20 June 2026, the charity cycle will begin at 9.00am from Castletownbere GAA Pitch in Droum, just outside Castletownbere. Participants can choose between two scenic routes, a challenging 100km course or a more leisurely 40km option, both offering spectacular views of the Beara Peninsula and an opportunity to enjoy one of Ireland’s most beautiful coastal landscapes.
The event honours the memory and legacy of Dave Fenton, a proud Kerry native who became deeply embedded in community life in Castletownbere. Dave served with the Castletownbere RNLI as deputy coxswain and deputy mechanic, taking part in numerous rescues during his years of service. His dedication to saving lives at sea saw him featured regularly on the BBC series Saving Lives at Sea, while he also received two Water Safety Ireland awards in recognition of his commitment and bravery. During his time with the Castletownbere lifeboat crew, 10 lives were saved in separate rescue operations.
Away from the water, Dave was equally passionate about local sport and community. He played with Castletownbere GAA and contributed greatly to the club both on and off the field. He was also part of the historic Castletownbere team that captured the 2012 Cork Intermediate Football Championship title.
Organisers say the charity cycle is about far more than distance or competition. Instead, it is intended as a welcoming, community-driven occasion that brings cyclists of all abilities together for a memorable day of participation, scenery and local spirit. Every euro raised from the event will go directly to the two beneficiary organisations.
The Castletownbere RNLI station continues to provide a vital volunteer search and rescue service along the rugged Beara coastline, while Castletownbere GAA remains at the heart of parish life, supporting players, families and the wider community through sport and social activities.
Following the cycle, participants and supporters are invited to gather in Castletownbere Square for a BBQ and live music from Pat Higgins, creating an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the day together.
Organisers are also appealing for volunteers to assist on the day and are encouraging the public to spread the word and support the event in any way possible.
