At 1.03am Sunday 17 August, Belfast coastguard requested that Newcastle RNLI launch their Inshore Lifeboat “Eliza” to assist in a multi-agency search for a missing person who may have entered the water along Newcastle promenade.

Newcastle’s volunteer crew launched their D class lifeboat within 12 minutes of the request and on arrival at the beach a few minutes later they commenced a shoreline search of the sea front whilst teams from Newcastle Coastguard, Kilkeel coastguard, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and Police Newry, Mourne & Down carried out wider searches on the beach and the local area.

With the weather being so calm with no wind and no swell Newcastle Inshore Lifeboat set off two white illuminating flares to assist in lighting up the area, this provided a larger search area to be cleared quicker.

As the search was ongoing, Police Newry, Mourne & Down were following up other lines of enquires and the missing person was located safe outside the search area.

If you see someone in trouble at the coast, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
