At 7pm on Friday evening (8 August), the volunteer crew at Fenit lifeboat station were tasked to go to the aid of a swimmer in difficulty in Tralee Bay.

The Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was launched promptly and proceeded to the location provided by local lifeguards, who had maintained continuous visual contact with the swimmer.
Thanks to the lifeguards’ vigilance and accurate positional updates, the ILB was able to proceed directly to the casualty without the need for a coordinated search pattern.
The swimmer was located approximately 2 miles from the initially reported position, having been carried offshore by strong currents and a strong outgoing tide. The ILB crew made contact and recovered the casualty, who was conscious but cold. Immediate warming measures were provided onboard.
Due to deteriorating weather conditions and fading light, the All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) was launched to provide cover for the ILB and assist if required.
The swimmer was safely brought ashore, and both lifeboats returned to station, where they were refuelled, washed down, and made ready for service.
This incident highlights the excellent coordination between local lifeguards and RNLI lifeboat crews. The lifeguards’ timely observation and communication were key to the swift and successful rescue, ensuring a safe outcome for the casualty and crew alike.
If you’re heading into the sea,
always swim at a lifeguarded beach and stay within the designated swim zone.
Be aware of tides, currents, and weather conditions and never underestimate how quickly conditions can change.
If you see someone in difficulty, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
