Volunteers from Portaferry RNLI recently visited Killyleagh to meet members of Belfast Kayak Club, who are taking part in the RNLI Mayday Mile. The initiative encourages participants to cover a mile a day throughout May to raise funds for the lifesaving charity.

The kayak club, which operates out of bases in Killyleagh and Groomsport, has set itself an ambitious goal of paddling 31 miles, one for each day of the month. Their efforts have already proven successful, with more than £1,000 raised so far in support of the RNLI’s work.

Portaferry RNLI inshore lifeboat helm Scott Blackwood praised the group’s commitment. He said it was “great to meet the members of Belfast Kayak Club who have taken on this challenge,” adding that he and several of his fellow crew members are also participating by walking the same distance during May.

Blackwood highlighted the importance of community-driven fundraising, noting that the RNLI relies heavily on public support to continue its mission of saving lives at sea. He commended the club’s achievement to date, thanking not only the paddlers but also their friends and families who have contributed to the cause.

“We have no doubt they will complete their paddle,” he said, adding that the Portaferry crew will be following their progress closely throughout the month.

Meanwhile, members of the club based in Groomsport are set to meet with crew from Donaghadee RNLI next week, further strengthening the connection between fundraisers and frontline lifesavers.

The RNLI is encouraging others to get involved, with the Mayday Mile challenge open to anyone interested in supporting the charity. More information can be found on the RNLI website.

Those wishing to sponsor Belfast Kayak Club can contribute via their dedicated fundraising page, helping to ensure the RNLI can continue its vital work around the coasts of Ireland and the UK.
