The 28 foot sail boat with one person on board was pinned to the navigation buoys on the northern side of the bridge with strong currents making it impossible for the skipper to maneuver his vessel.

Members of the public become concerned for the vessel and the occupant on board and called the Coast Guard for assistance.

The on duty watch officers in the MRCC Valentia coordinated the response and requested Killaloe Coast Guard to launch and assist.

A boat crew launched from Pier Head Killaloe and were on scene within minutes. The crew went down river south of the bridge and maneuvered the Rescue boat back against the strong currents until it was alongside the casualty vessel.

The skipper on board was safe and well and wearing a life jacket. A Coast Guard crew member was transferred on board and a tow line was set up, the vessel was taken on tow to safety where a shore team assisted in the safe mooring of the vessel north of Killaloe Bridge.

At 8:15pm the crew was stood down and returned to base.

Remember if you see someone in difficulty please call 112/999 and ask for Coast Guard.
