Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford – Kilmore Quay RNLI launched on Monday afternoon (15 June) to assist the crew of an 8-metre motorboat that had suffered engine failure and was drifting in dense fog near the Saltee Islands.

The volunteer lifeboat crew were requested to launch their all-weather Tamar class lifeboat, RNLB Killarney, by the Irish Coast Guard at 2:43pm. Under the command of Coxswain Aidan Bates and with five crew members on board, the lifeboat launched promptly and proceeded to the reported position.

Visibility in the area was severely reduced due to dense fog, although sea conditions were described as slight.

The lifeboat arrived on scene at 3:06pm, where crew members first confirmed that all persons aboard the disabled vessel were safe and well. Following an assessment of the situation, and taking into account both the vessel's position and the poor visibility, the decision was made to establish a tow and bring the motorboat safely back to shore.

RNLB Killarney subsequently towed the casualty vessel to Kilmore Quay, arriving at the harbour at 3:56pm. After the motorboat was safely secured alongside the pontoon, the lifeboat returned to its berth in the marina, where it was refuelled and made ready for service once again.

Volunteer Opportunity at Kilmore Quay RNLI

While RNLI lifeboat crews are often the most visible part of the charity's lifesaving work, a wide range of volunteer roles help keep stations operational.

Kilmore Quay RNLI is currently seeking a volunteer to take on the shore-based role of Lifeboat Operations Manager. The position offers an opportunity to lead the station's existing team, develop new skills, and play a vital role in supporting lifesaving operations within the local community.

Further information is available through the station's social media channels, the RNLI website, or by visiting the lifeboat station in Kilmore Quay.
