Kilkeel RNLI rescues two after speedboat breaks down in busy Carlingford Lough shipping channel

Kilkeel RNLI launched to assist two people after their small speedboat broke down in a busy shipping channel on Carlingford Lough on Saturday evening (1 August).
The alarm was raised at approximately 9.30pm when the pair contacted the Coastguard to report that their speedboat had suffered engine failure on the navigational channel midway between Greencastle and Greenore. With no lights on board, they had deployed their anchor but were concerned that an approaching vessel might not see them in time to avoid a collision.
Kilkeel RNLI's Shannon class lifeboat Bobby Cameron launched immediately and arrived on scene around 30 minutes later. Once alongside the casualty vessel, a volunteer crew member boarded to assist with recovering the anchor before assessing the situation. It was determined that the safest option was to establish a tow, and the speedboat was taken safely to Greencastle where the two people were brought ashore. Kilkeel Coastguard Rescue Team was also in attendance.
Speaking following the callout, Kilkeel RNLI Coxswain Gerry Smyth said: "We are thankful for a successful outcome. We would always advise boat owners and operators to check their vessels and equipment before every trip. Make sure your engine is serviced regularly, check your fuel, and ensure your boat is well maintained."
"Conditions can change rapidly and a small issue can develop into something serious. The people we assisted did the right thing by calling for help immediately. If you get into difficulty, or see someone else in trouble, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard."
The RNLI is reminding anyone planning to head afloat to carry appropriate safety equipment, ensure their vessel is properly maintained, and always let someone know their plans before setting out.
