Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat was requested by Valentia Coast Guard earlier today, Sunday 16 August, to assist a rower who was struggling with fatigue at Parker’s Point on Lough Derg.

At 1.55pm, Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat Jean Spier launched with helm Owen Cavanagh and crew Doireann Kennedy, Joe O’Donoghue and Chris Parker on board.

Conditions on the lake included a southeasterly Force 4 wind, with good visibility that was later decreasing to moderate in rain and mist.

The lifeboat volunteers arrived on scene at 2.10pm and found that the casualty had remained in his canoe, seeking shelter close to the shoreline at Parker’s Point.

Due to known hazards in the area, helm Owen Cavanagh asked the crew to prepare to anchor and veer down to the casualty. The rower was safely taken aboard Jean Spier, after which RNLI volunteers recovered his canoe.

The casualty was then brought safely to Garrykennedy Harbour, where he was met by friends. He did not require medical assistance.

Commenting on the callout, Aoife Kennedy, Launching Authority at Lough Derg RNLI, said: “The casualty made the correct decision to request immediate assistance when he realised he needed help.

“Remember, the RNLI advises rowers to row in company, check local weather before setting out, carry a reliable means of communication like a VHF radio or waterproof mobile phone, and know how to ‘Float to Live’ if capsized or immersed in cold or deep water.”
