On Saturday, 11 April, volunteers from Lough Neagh Rescue were tasked by Belfast Coastguard at 6:03 pm following a report from a concerned member of the public. The caller had spotted what appeared to be a capsized dinghy approximately 500 metres from the mouth of the Sixmile River in Antrim.

Rescue crews were quickly deployed to the scene to investigate the situation. After arriving and speaking directly with the individual who raised the alarm, it was determined that the object in question was not a vessel in distress, but a weather monitoring station.

While the call turned out to be a false alarm, Lough Neagh Rescue emphasised the importance of public awareness and vigilance. They expressed sincere thanks to the member of the public who took the time to report the sighting, noting that such actions play a crucial role in ensuring safety on the Lough and surrounding waterways.

Following the assessment, the crew returned to station and remain ready to respond to any future incidents.

If you see someone in difficulty on or near the water, please dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
