Portaferry RNLI rescues two stranded paddleboarders from Salt Island

Portaferry RNLI volunteers came to the aid of two paddleboarders who became stranded on Salt Island, south of Strangford Lough, after conditions deteriorated.
The volunteer crew launched the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Blue Peter V at 10.50am on Saturday 25 July at the request of Belfast Coastguard, following reports that two paddleboarders were stranded on Salt Island.
The lifeboat launched with volunteer helm Chris Adair and crew members Molly Crowe, Becca Nightingale and Chris Hannon on board.
Weather conditions at the time of launch were a Force 3 gentle north-westerly breeze with partial cloud, good visibility and a moderately choppy sea state.
The casualties were located quickly on arrival. Although cold and unable to leave the island due to the strengthening conditions and a Force 5 fresh inshore breeze, both were found to be well.
After paddling out to the lifeboat, the two casualties were brought safely on board and transferred to the care of Coastguard personnel waiting at Killyleagh Yacht Club pontoon.
Speaking following the rescue, Portaferry RNLI volunteer helm Chris Adair said:
"It took us 15 minutes to travel to Salt Island from Portaferry station, however there was a significant change in the strength of the wind in that short time.
"Staying together and calling for help in this situation is always the correct thing to do.
"Before heading out onto the water, always check the weather and tide times for your location, on both your outward and return journey.
"Make sure you are wearing a lifejacket or suitable personal flotation device for your activity, and always carry a means of calling for help. If this is a mobile phone, ensure you have equipment to keep the phone fully charged.
"If you are in difficulty on the water, or see someone else in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
After returning to Portaferry lifeboat station, the volunteer shore crew recovered the Atlantic 85, washed down and refuelled the lifeboat, ensuring it was ready for service should the next emergency call come in.
