Portrush RNLI crew respond to fishing vessel aground at Inishowen

Thursday 1 October 2026
Portrush RNLI’s All-weather Lifeboat was launched early this morning after a fishing vessel carrying five people ran aground off Inishowen.

The volunteer crew were requested to launch by the Coastguard at 6.46am today, Thursday, following reports that the fishing vessel was in difficulty.
Greencastle Coastguard was also alerted and was making its way to the scene as the lifeboat crew prepared to respond.
Conditions at the time were favourable, with a light wind, partly cloudy skies and good visibility, allowing the Portrush crew to make good progress towards the casualty.
The lifeboat arrived on scene at 7.28am, but by then another fishing vessel had successfully towed the stricken boat clear of the rocks.
The fishing vessel, which had five people on board, was subsequently able to make its own way towards Greencastle Harbour.
The Portrush RNLI All-weather Lifeboat escorted the vessel on its return, with local fishing boats and Greencastle Delta also assisting.
Once the fishing vessel was safely on its way, the Portrush crew were stood down at 8.02am and returned to station.
Beni McAllister, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Portrush RNLI, said the favourable conditions had helped the crew reach the scene quickly.
“The conditions for the shout this morning were ideal and the crew made good speed to the scene along with our colleagues at Greencastle Coastguard.
“Thanks to another fishing vessel all was good when we arrived and a tow had been established and was underway.”
The All-weather Lifeboat and its volunteer crew are now back on station at Portrush, having refuelled and completed their preparations, ready to respond to the next emergency call.
