UNION HALL, Co Cork - Union Hall RNLI launched on Saturday evening (13 June), following reports of a 20-foot pleasure craft with two people onboard experiencing difficulties after its propeller became fouled approximately one mile south-east of High Island, west of Glandore Harbour in West Cork.

The alarm was raised at 8.27pm when the owner of the casualty vessel contacted a local fisherman seeking assistance. The fisherman subsequently relayed the information to a crew member at Union Hall RNLI, who in turn notified the Launch Authority. Following an assessment of the information received, the decision was made to launch the lifeboat.

The Union Hall RNLI lifeboat Christine and Raymond Fielding, under the command of Helm Tim Forde and crew members Ríona Casey and Cathal Deasy, arrived on scene and assisted the vessel in freeing its fouled propeller.

Although sea conditions were favourable at the time, the volunteer crew decided that the safest course of action was to establish a towline and escort the casualty vessel back to the nearest safe harbour at Castlehaven.

Supporting the operation ashore were Head Launcher Hugh Mc'Nulty, Niamh Collins and Denis O'Donovan.

Speaking following the callout, Union Hall RNLI Helm Tim Forde said:

"With the alarm being raised early, it was a good outcome this evening. If you see anyone in difficulty on or near the water, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard."

The lifeboat subsequently returned to station and was made ready for service.
