Bundoran RNLI rescues swimmer after reports of three people in difficulty at Tullan Strand

Bundoran RNLI launched its inshore lifeboat on Friday evening (31 July) following reports of three swimmers in difficulty at Tullan Strand.

The volunteer crew were requested to launch by the Coast Guard at 9.17pm after concerns were raised about swimmers experiencing difficulty in the water.

The inshore lifeboat, helmed by Richard Gillespie with crew members Finn Mullen and Oisin Cassidy, arrived on scene and quickly located one casualty who had managed to make their way onto rocks. The casualty was recovered onto the lifeboat and brought back to Bundoran Lifeboat Station, where they were treated by the RNLI's Local Medical Adviser and a local paramedic.

Two further swimmers were able to make their way safely ashore. One of these was assisted from the water by a surf instructor from Bundoran Surf Co. Both casualties were assessed by RNLI shore crew, with one later airlifted to hospital by Rescue 118 for further treatment.

Also assisting at the scene were Bundoran Fire Brigade, the National Ambulance Service and An Garda Síochána.

Speaking following the call out, Bundoran RNLI Helm Richard Gillespie praised the coordinated response by all emergency services and highlighted the importance of staying safe in and around the water.

"Conditions can change very quickly and we would encourage anyone entering the water to be aware of local conditions, never swim alone and always carry a means of calling for help where possible. As we head into a busy period on our beaches, we would urge everyone to read and follow local safety signage and familiarise themselves with the location of rip currents before entering the water. Rip currents can be extremely dangerous and can quickly carry even experienced swimmers away from shore."

The rescue came less than 24 hours before another call for the volunteer crew. On Saturday (1 August), Bundoran RNLI launched following reports of a casualty in the water. The lifeboat crew carried out a thorough search of the area alongside Coast Guard units and other emergency service personnel. Following an extensive search, the incident was stood down after no casualty was located and it was determined that the call had been made with good intent.

Bundoran RNLI has thanked all agencies involved in both incidents for their professionalism, assistance and cooperation.

The RNLI is reminding anyone who sees someone in difficulty in the water to call 999 or 112 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard.
