Busy Sunday Sees Killaloe Coast Guard Respond to Three Consecutive Call-Outs

It was a busy Sunday afternoon for Killaloe Coast Guard, with volunteers responding to three back-to-back taskings in just over two hours.

At 12:25 pm, the unit was tasked to assist a cruiser with two people on board that had suffered engine failure approximately 1km north of Killaloe at Ballyvally.

On arrival, a Coast Guard crew member was transferred aboard the casualty vessel, where a stern tow was established. The vessel was safely towed back to Killaloe, where a shore team assisted with its secure mooring.

The crew returned to base at 1:30 pm.

Just 10 minutes later, at 1:40 pm, the unit was requested to relaunch following reports of a kayaker who had capsized at Yaghal Quay, with a swimmer attempting to provide assistance.

The boat crew immediately relaunched while a shore team responded by road. However, while en route, the incident was stood down after nearby vessels successfully assisted the kayaker, who was confirmed to be safe and well.

The crew returned to base at 1:50 pm.

At 1:55 pm, the volunteers were tasked for a third time after a vessel with one person on board experienced engine failure approximately 2km north of Killaloe.

The skipper had dropped anchor and requested assistance. The Coast Guard boat crew arrived on scene within seven minutes of launching and transferred a crew member aboard the casualty vessel. A stern tow was established, and the vessel was safely towed back to Killaloe, where the shore team again assisted with mooring.

All crews returned to base and stood down at 2:45 pm.

Following the afternoon's incidents, Killaloe Coast Guard is reminding visitors to the area to park responsibly and avoid blocking access to the Coast Guard station at Pier Head.

Clear access is essential to ensure emergency response vehicles and volunteer personnel can deploy without delay when responding to incidents on Lough Derg.
