The kayaker had been out at sea near Renvyle when they got into difficulty after their kayak overturned. Unable to get back on board, they swam to the nearest shoreline Crump Island, a small uninhabited island where they waited for assistance.

Clifden RNLI’s volunteer crew launched their Atlantic 85 lifeboat shortly after 6:30pm, making swift progress to the scene in what were described as bright, clear conditions with calm seas. Upon arrival, the casualty was found in good spirits, though they had sustained minor injuries. The crew provided initial care before transporting the individual safely back to shore.

The rescue was led by helm Joe Acton, alongside crew members Dara Wallace, Caroline Barry and Brian Ward. Fergal Conneely acted as Launch Authority for the operation. Once ashore, the casualty was handed over to colleagues from Cleggan Coast Guard.

Speaking after the incident, Joe Acton highlighted the importance of water safety as activity increases along the Connemara coast:

“We are coming into a busy time for water activities and while we want everyone to enjoy our beautiful Connemara coastline, please do so carefully. Anyone going to sea should wear a life-jacket, have a VHF radio or means of calling for help, check the tides and weather. Never swim alone and always call 999/112 and ask for the Coast Guard at the first sign of distress. Clifden RNLI are ready to respond 24/7.”
