Father and son rescued by Crosshaven RNLI after being cut off by incoming tide

Crosshaven RNLI volunteers rescued a father and son who became cut off by the incoming tide while fishing from a disused pier below Camden Fort Meagher on Friday evening (30 October).

The Crosshaven RNLI volunteer crew were paged by the Coast Guard at 7.05pm following reports that the two people had become stranded by the rising tide.
The father and son had walked along the shoreline to the disused pier a few hours earlier to enjoy an evening fishing trip. However, they had not realised that the incoming tide would cut off their route back to shore, leaving them unable to return safely.
The volunteer crew launched the lifeboat and made their way to the pier in slight sea conditions and poor visibility. The two casualties were located and safely taken aboard the lifeboat. Both were unharmed and were brought back to the lifeboat station at Crosshaven.
Crosshaven Coast Guard personnel then assisted by providing the pair with a lift back to their vehicle.
Commenting following the call-out, Crosshaven RNLI Helm Alan Venner said:
“It's important to always be aware of the tides and the times of high water before venturing along the seashore. What may be an accessible route at low tide can quickly become cut off as the tide comes in. We would encourage anyone planning a walk or fishing trip along the coastline to check tide times in advance and make sure they have a safe route back.”
The lifeboat crew on the call-out were Alan Venner, Conor Barry, Griff Kelleher and Darren O'Keeffe.
The shore crew were Shane McAuliffe, Michael Livingstone, Hugh Mockler, Susanne Deane, Kline Pennefather and Aidan O'Connor. Michael McCann was Launch Authority.
