The grant will support the purchase of two new boats, a Whaly 210 and a Whaly 270, providing a valuable addition to the organisation’s equipment and enhancing its ability to carry out search and recovery operations along the River Slaney and surrounding waterways.

The funding, provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, will help the volunteer-led organisation improve its response capabilities, particularly in areas where access can prove challenging for larger vessels.

The two new boats are ideally suited to operating in shallow water, along riverbanks and in confined waterways, making them particularly valuable during search operations and flooding incidents. Their addition will also provide greater flexibility when responding to emergencies in difficult-to-reach locations.

A spokesperson for Slaney Search and Rescue welcomed the funding, describing it as an important investment in the organisation’s equipment and its ongoing commitment to serving the local community.

The organisation expressed its sincere appreciation to the Department for the support, while also acknowledging the recognition given to the work carried out by its dedicated volunteers.

The €5,000 award represents a significant boost for Slaney Search and Rescue, helping ensure its volunteers have access to the appropriate equipment to continue providing an important search, recovery and emergency response service to the communities along the River Slaney.

The organisation also thanked everyone involved in making the funding possible.
