In a significant development for maritime safety, Minister Seán Canney officially broke ground for the new Coast Guard Station in Greystones, Co. Wicklow. This project is a collaborative effort with the Office of Public Works (OPW), with Minister of State Kevin Boxer Moran also participating in the ceremony.

The new station is set to be a state-of-the-art facility that will bolster the emergency response capabilities of the Greystones/Wicklow Coast Guard Unit. It aims to enhance safety and efficiency along the coastline, ensuring that the Coast Guard is well-equipped to handle various emergencies.
The new station will include
Operations Room: A central hub for coordinating search and rescue operations.
Training Room: Dedicated space for the ongoing education and preparedness of volunteers.
Kitchenette: Facilities for meal preparation and breaks during long operations.
Drying Room: Essential for maintaining equipment and personal gear in optimal condition.
Stores: Secure areas for storing necessary supplies and equipment.
Boathouse and Boat Launch Facilities: Critical for quick deployment in maritime emergencies.
Changing Facilities: Providing comfort and convenience for volunteers before and after missions.
The Greystones/Wicklow Coast Guard Unit, with roots stretching back to the 1920s, is a cornerstone of safety in the region. It provides comprehensive land, cliff, and maritime search and rescue services across an extensive catchment area, from Shanganagh and Bray to Brittas.
This year alone, the 32 committed volunteers of the unit have responded to 52 incidents, showcasing their dedication and the critical role they play in safeguarding the community.
The new Coast Guard Station in Greystones not only represents an investment in infrastructure but also a commitment to the safety and well-being of those along the Wicklow coastline. As this project progresses, it promises to enhance the operational capabilities of the Coast Guard and ensure a safer environment for all.
