Killaloe Coast Guard was tasked on Sunday evening (31 May) to assist a cruiser experiencing engine difficulties south of Portumna on Lough Derg.

The alert was received during the afternoon, with a Coast Guard boat crew launching from Pier Head, Killaloe, at 4:30 p.m. A shore-based team was also deployed by road to Dromineer Harbour to support the operation.
Upon arrival at the scene, Coast Guard personnel found that the stricken cruiser had already been taken under tow by a passing powerboat that had come to the vessel's assistance.
The cruiser was subsequently brought safely to Terryglass Harbour, where it was securely moored. No further assistance from the Coast Guard was required.
Following the successful conclusion of the incident, all Coast Guard personnel stood down and returned to base by 6:00 p.m.
The operation highlighted the importance of mariners looking out for one another on the water and the value of a rapid response when difficulties arise.
The Coast Guard reminds all water users to ensure their vessels are properly maintained before heading afloat and to carry appropriate means of communication. In the event of an emergency on the water, contact the Coast Guard immediately by calling 112 or 999 and asking for the Coast Guard.
