On Friday, 8 May, Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery received a call reporting a dog swimming in the river near the Viaduct Bridge area. The dog’s owner was understandably distressed, fearing the dog would become exhausted and get into difficulty in the middle of the river.

Thankfully, a crew was already at the boathouse carrying out maintenance work, allowing the rescue boat to be launched immediately.

Upon arrival at the scene, the crew discovered the dog, later identified as Charlie, happily swimming around and clearly enjoying himself. Every time the crew attempted to approach, Charlie would simply swim away, even turning his head at one stage as if to say, “Leave me alone, I’m having too much fun!”

Although Charlie appeared comfortable in the water, the crew remained alongside him throughout the incident to ensure he did not get into any difficulty. After some time, he safely swam back to shore where he was reunited with his relieved owner.

After the successful outcome, the crew returned to base, washed down the boat, and restaged all equipment so everything was ready for the next emergency call.
