A swimmer was safely rescued this afternoon (Sunday 31 May), after becoming trapped beneath the wooden bridge at Dollymount Beach, thanks to the swift actions of local Sea Scouts who were nearby completing a leadership training exercise.

The Irish Coast Guard Operations Centre received an emergency 999 call shortly after 2 p.m. reporting that a person was trapped under the bridge at Dollymount Beach. Coast Guard and RNLI resources were immediately tasked to respond to the incident.
However, members of 5th Port Dollymount Sea Scouts, who were in the vicinity undertaking a leadership course on the water, witnessed the swimmer in difficulty and responded without delay.
Using their training and seamanship skills, the scouts quickly reached the casualty by boat, successfully freed them from under the bridge, and brought them safely ashore. As a result of their prompt intervention, no further assistance from emergency services was required.
A leader with 5th Port Dollymount Sea Scouts praised the actions of the young volunteers.
"This incident truly reflects the leadership and preparedness we emphasise in our training. The scouts remained calm, assessed the situation quickly, and acted effectively to bring the swimmer to safety."
The incident highlights the value of maritime training and water safety education, with the scouts' rapid response preventing what could have become a more serious situation.
The Coast Guard has reminded the public to swim only at lifeguard-patrolled beaches whenever possible and to remain aware of local conditions and hazards.
Anyone who sees a person in difficulty along the coast is urged to call 112 or 999 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard.
