Valentia Coast Guard alerted Crosshaven RNLI's Launch Authority at 8:20am after receiving reports that the vessel was experiencing difficulties approximately seven miles offshore. Although the yacht was making its way towards Crosshaven, concerns were raised that it may have difficulty safely navigating the shipping channel at Roches Point due to the loss of engine power.

The RNLI lifeboat John & Janet launched at 9:05am with crew members Dave Venner, Warren Forbes, Conor Barry and Alex Barry on board.

The lifeboat located the casualty vessel off Roches Point, where sea conditions were reported to be choppy with a Force 5 easterly wind. Following an assessment, it was decided that the safest option was to place the yacht under tow.

The yacht was subsequently towed without incident to Crosshaven Boatyard, where it was brought safely alongside.

Shore support for the operation was provided by Darryl Hughes, James Cotter, Alan Venner, Kevin McCarthy, Griff Kelleher, Susanne Deane and Jon McClean. Hugh Mockler acted as Launch Authority for the callout.

The incident marked the third service call of the weekend for Crosshaven RNLI volunteers.

Boaters are reminded to ensure engines and fuel systems are regularly inspected and maintained before putting to sea. Passage plans should take account of weather and sea conditions, and vessels should carry reliable communications equipment. Anyone experiencing difficulties on the water is advised to seek assistance early by contacting the Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16 or by calling 112/999 and asking for the Coast Guard.
