Fethard RNLI assists two people after boat breaks down off Hook Head

Fethard RNLI came to the aid of two people yesterday (Sunday 19 July) after their 17ft motorboat broke down approximately one mile off Hook Head.

The volunteer lifeboat crew were requested by the Irish Coast Guard to launch their inshore lifeboat at 11.32am to assess the situation.

Helm John Colfer, alongside crew members Rebecca Doyle and Clara Bracken, launched from Slade and made their way to the casualty vessel.

On arrival, the crew found that while the two people onboard were safe and well, their boat had suffered a mechanical failure and was unable to make safe onward progress. Given the vessel's close proximity to a shipping lane and the presence of other vessels in the area, the helm determined that the safest course of action was to establish a tow to the nearest safe harbour at Duncannon.

Speaking following the call out, Fethard RNLI Helm John Colfer said:

"Due to the potential hazard with other vessels in the area and the nearby shipping lane, the tow was essential and we were happy to help the motorboaters out. This was the first call out for Clara which gave her a great opportunity to put her training and skills attained to date into action."

John also reminded those planning to head afloat to take simple safety precautions before setting out.

"We would encourage anyone planning a trip to sea to always go prepared. Always let someone know where you are going and when you are due back. Always wear a lifejacket or suitable flotation device for your activity and always carry a means of communication such as a VHF radio or mobile phone in a waterproof pouch. Should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard."

Fethard RNLI is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to respond to emergencies at sea thanks to its dedicated volunteer crew.
