Killaloe Coast Guard Responds to Fuel Spill Incident on Lough Derg

BALLINA, CO. TIPPERARY – Killaloe Coast Guard was tasked on Sunday afternoon to investigate reports of a fuel spill at Ballina Quay on Lough Derg, following concerns raised by members of the public.

An Garda Síochána received multiple calls after a strong smell of fuel was detected in the area, with fuel also observed on the surface of the water.
Coast Guard volunteers responded to the scene and carried out an assessment of the incident. Following enquiries, the crew successfully located the source of the spill. After speaking with the vessel owner involved, it was confirmed that there was no further risk of fuel entering the waterway.
All relevant information and findings were reported to the Coast Guard's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Valentia, as well as to An Garda Síochána.
The incident was subsequently brought under control, and Killaloe Coast Guard personnel were stood down at 15:10hrs.
