Killaloe Coast Guard Responds to Two Incidents on Busy Tuesday

Tuesday, 23 June proved to be a busy day for volunteers from Killaloe Coast Guard Unit, who responded to two separate incidents on Lough Derg and the River Shannon within a matter of hours.

The first call came at 2:00pm, when the unit was tasked to reports of a possible missing swimmer in the Mountshannon area. The Killaloe Coast Guard rescue boat launched immediately and was joined in the search by Rescue 115, the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter. A crew from the National Ambulance Service also responded to Mountshannon Harbour to provide support on shore.

Following a coordinated search operation, the individual was located safe and well on Holy Island. The person was taken aboard the Coast Guard rescue vessel and transported back to Mountshannon Harbour, where they were handed into the care of An Garda Síochána.

By 3:30pm, the crew had returned to base and the rescue boat was refuelled and prepared for any further tasking.

Just a few hours later, at 6:06pm, Killaloe Coast Guard was tasked for a second time after a 25-foot cruiser developed engine difficulties approximately one kilometre north of Killaloe.

The vessel, carrying two people on board, was located and safely taken under tow by the Coast Guard rescue boat. The cruiser was brought back to a private marina, where it was secured without incident.

The crew returned to base at 7:00pm, where they were stood down following a busy afternoon and evening of operations.

Killaloe Coast Guard is reminding all water users to plan ahead before heading out on the water. Ensure your vessel is well maintained, check fuel levels and engine condition before departure, and always carry appropriate safety equipment, including lifejackets for all persons on board. Swimmers and boaters should also inform someone of their plans and expected return time. In an emergency on the water or along the coast, dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
