On Monday evening, November 17, a coordinated rescue effort was launched in response to reports of a person entering the water south of Killaloe Bridge. This operation involved multiple agencies, including the Killaloe Coast Guard unit, the Coast Guard Helicopter R117 from Waterford, the Killaloe Fire and Rescue Service, the National Ambulance Service, and An Garda Síochána.

The Marine Coordination Centre in Valentia activated the Killaloe Coast Guard unit’s pager system at 4:58 pm. Demonstrating remarkable efficiency, the first rescue boat was en route to the scene within six minutes of the call. Just two minutes after launching, the crew arrived at the location and discovered the individual being assisted onto a moored vessel on the Tipperary shore in Ballina. Meanwhile, the unit’s D-class rescue boat had also been launched from the public slipway in Ballina, Co. Tipperary.
Once on board the vessel, Coast Guard crew members conducted an immediate assessment of the casualty. The individual was wrapped in warm blankets to prevent hypothermia and was closely monitored until the arrival of the National Ambulance Service a short time later.
The collaborative efforts of the Coast Guard and Fire and Rescue crews were crucial in safely transferring the casualty from the vessel to the awaiting ambulance. The individual was then transported to University Hospital Limerick for further medical evaluation and care.
This incident highlights the effectiveness of multi-agency responses and the dedication of emergency services to ensuring public safety.
Remember if you see someone in difficulty please call 112/999 and ask for Coast Guard.
