Red Bay RNLI assists vessel following engine failure off Carnlough

Red Bay RNLI lifeboat crew were called into service on Monday evening, 21 September, to assist a 6.5-metre vessel with two people on board after it suffered engine failure off Carnlough, Co Antrim.
The crew launched at 7.31pm following a request from Belfast Coastguard. The vessel, which had lost engine power, had contacted the Coastguard for assistance while offshore.
Red Bay RNLI proceeded to the casualty vessel and located it safely. Once alongside, the lifeboat crew were able to assist with the engine problem and establish that the vessel and its two occupants were safe.
The lifeboat then escorted the vessel towards Cushendall, ensuring it reached harbour safely. The operation was completed at approximately 8.30pm, with both people on board reported safe and well.
The incident highlights the importance of being prepared for an engine failure or other mechanical problem while at sea. Even relatively short trips close to shore can quickly become hazardous if a vessel loses power, particularly in changing weather or tidal conditions.
The RNLI advises all boat users to check their vessel before going to sea, including fuel, engine, steering, electrical systems and safety equipment. Skippers should also ensure that everyone on board knows where the lifejackets are and how to use them.
Before setting out, check the weather forecast, tides and sea conditions, and make sure someone ashore knows your intended route and expected return time. Carry a reliable means of communication, such as a VHF radio, and ensure that it is working and that you know how to use it.
If you experience difficulty at sea, contact the Coastguard early rather than waiting for the situation to deteriorate. In an emergency, make a Mayday call on VHF Channel 16 or dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
The RNLI also recommends that boat users wear a properly fitted lifejacket or buoyancy aid at all times while on the water, particularly when conditions are challenging or when moving around a vessel.
