Water Safety Appeal Ahead of Busy Bank Holiday Weekend

Water Safety Ireland, the Irish Coast Guard and the RNLI are urging swimmers, visitors and holidaymakers to take extra care around the coast this Bank Holiday weekend as thousands are expected to make the most of the warm weather and head to beaches, harbours and waterways across the country.

The three organisations are encouraging everyone planning a trip to the coast to familiarise themselves with local conditions before entering the water and to take a few moments to read safety signage and identify any potential hazards, including rip currents.

Where possible, people are advised to choose a lifeguarded beach or waterway, where trained lifeguards are on duty to provide assistance and respond quickly in an emergency.

Lifeguards around the country have already been responding to numerous incidents involving inflatable toys and air mattresses. While they may seem harmless, these lightweight inflatables can be quickly carried offshore by even light winds or currents and can capsize unexpectedly, leaving users in serious danger.

As Friday 31 July marks International Lifeguard Appreciation Day, the organisations are also recognising the dedication and professionalism of lifeguards who work throughout the summer to help keep beach users safe.

Staying safe this Bank Holiday

Whether you're swimming, paddleboarding, boating, kayaking or simply enjoying a walk along the shoreline, following a few simple precautions can make all the difference:

• Check the weather forecast and tide times before heading out.

• Choose a lifeguarded beach or waterway whenever possible.

• Read and follow local safety signage.

• Be aware of rip currents, which can quickly carry swimmers away from shore.

• Enter the water slowly to reduce the risk of cold-water shock.

• Swim with others and always stay within your depth.

• Leave inflatable toys and air mattresses at home.

• Avoid alcohol when taking part in or supervising water-based activities.

• Always wear a lifejacket or suitable buoyancy aid for your activity.

• Keep children under constant, uninterrupted supervision whenever they are near water.

• If walking along the coast, stay alert to rising tides to avoid becoming stranded.

• Tell someone ashore where you are going and when you expect to return.

• Carry a reliable means of calling for help, such as a fully charged mobile phone or a marine VHF radio.

Anyone who notices a person in difficulty on the water or along the coast should immediately call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard, or make contact on marine VHF Channel 16.

With a little planning and by making safe choices, everyone can enjoy Ireland's coastline safely this Bank Holiday weekend.
